DIY: Embroidered Patch

DIYRaquel BusaComment

When I make my makeup bag, I start by embroidering a piece of fabric. Then, I use that piece of fabric to sew a bag. Usually my designs are large and are created over the course of a couple of days. I thought it would be a great idea to share a DIY version of the process so you can decorate your own makeup bag with an embroidered patch at home. This makes a great gift for a friend. You can fill it with tons of her favorite makeup, a gift certificate to Sephora or her favorite boutique.

Here is what you'll need:

  • Plain Makeup Bag
  • A Piece of Fabric
  • Embroidery Thread (Lace weight yarn will do just fine)
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Embroidery Loom
  • Scissors
  • 4 pins
  • Sewing Thread
  • Sewing Machine (You can hand sew, if you do not have a sewing machine)

After you have secured your fabric to the embroidery loom. Begin by tying a knot behind the loom and fabric.

Start your stem stitch by bringing your needle through the middle of the last stitch and repeat. Don't worry about keeping the stitch straight. Little curves in your stitches adds interest to your design.

When finished, center your design where you would like it on your bag. Secure it with a few hand stitches. Fold the raw edges over, pin the edges to the bag and machine sew the edges down. If you do not have a sewing machine, you can hand stitch this part.

And we are all done.
